WhatsApp finally rolls out dark mode in latest app beta update

WhatsApp has finally rolled out dark mode for its users after along wait.  WhatsApp Beta users who have updated to WhatsApp Beta version 2.20.13 can now access dark mode.

WhatsApp has reportedly been experimenting on dark mode versions for more than 18 months.  WABetaInfo.com had confirmed WhatsApp is working on two different dark modes – with a third option possible on the way soon too.

The new dark theme projected three configurations only two have been implemented so far. The first dark was to adopt a configuration of very dark colours for the table and background. The second theme uses softer shades of dark colours for both table and cells background.

However, from the current update, the theme shift is more of a deeper grayscale compared to pitch dark. It also lacks the True Black pitches present in other dark themes.

The latest WhatsApp beta adds a dedicated dark mode option, but it isn’t quite what users might have been expecting.

If you’re running the latest WhatsApp beta, some users are seeing the latest option under themes. If you’re not enrolled in the beta testing program, you can sideload the APK to get the dark mode working on your Android.

Apart from the looks, WhatsApp dark mode does compliment the system settings if you like. The dedicated toggle in settings will allow you to auto-switch themes depending on whether the system dar mode is enabled. You can also leave it active at all times. We recently covered how you can implement dark mode on WhatsApp Web, and Facebook it’s simple.

How to get WhatsApp dark mode on your device

  • You need to update your WhatsApp version to the 2.20.13 Android beta update, to use the Dark Theme feature.
  • Previous updates might get the feature as well, but WhatsApp is always used to enable features in recent updates (that might contain bug fixes and improvements for the feature), so you should install the update as above mentioned.
  • If you have already updated to the most recent version available and you don’t see the feature, please back up your chat history and reinstall WhatsApp if you don’t want to wait for more.
Every time you reinstall WhatsApp, the most updated configurations from the server are downloaded, enabling the feature for you.

Alternatively, you can wait for the update. The feature will automatically be enabled in the next updates.
