Kenyan Businesses Benefiting From Covid 19

Its been a little more than a month and Corona Virus has already done a number on Kenyan business. Several shut down or remain inoperative, institutions have laid off employees, cut wages, and individuals’ livelihoods are heading downhill.

Brands in the transport industry such as Jambo Jet have seen a decline in demand as people stay at home, while brick and mortar stores selling books and school uniforms have also received the short end of the stick. Corporates across all sectors that have been affected, but not all negatively. Nendo Limited has published an infographic about the impact of COVID-19 on consumers and corporates in Kenya, sifting out winners and losers. Here are some local businesses that are thriving during this time.

1. Courier And Delivery Services

Trusted marketplaces for Boda Boda riders and delivery services such as SafeBoda and Sendy can expect to gain in prominence.

2.  E-Commerce Websites

This goes hand in hand with the first Covid19 booming business. As more people order online, delivery of those items are then required. The likes of Jumia and Kilimall have experienced greater demand during COVID-19.

3. Mobile Money

The demand for mobile money transfer has increased especially after using cash has been discouraged. This is also aided by the Kenya Central Bank’s decision to lift the ceiling on mobile money balances and daily limits  PesaLink and Safaricom’s M-Pesa have also waived fees on respective transfer limits.

4. E-Learning Platforms

There’s increased demand for e-learning platforms as parents look for a way to ensure they educate their kids from home. Parents also benefit from easier access to material that is either free or affordable. Longhorn Publishers for example, has waived all fees for its Class 1 to Form 4 curriculum.

Eneza Education and ViuSasa followed suit. These platforms alongside e-learning providers like BRCK, Kytabu, Ubongo Kids, among others are presenting options to parents who must take control of their children’s education during COVID-19.
