GO-JEK backed SafeBoda launches SafeBoda Shop to beef up your grocery shopping

SafeBoda, the Ugandan-born Go-Jek funded ride-hailing platform with plans to offer reliable and safe transportation to its customers has launched SafeBoda shop to beef up its deliveries and mobile payments arms.

SafeBoda shop, an in-app grocery store will bolster traffic and revenues to the firm’s newly launched deliveries arm as well as its increase the use of its mobile wallet and loyalty points.

With an undisclosed Series B round co-led by Allianz X, the digital investment unit of the Allianz Group, Go-Ventures, an arm of GO-JEK the firm is nearing its dream of being a pan- African super-app.

“Not only can you take rides Rides,Send parcels, Order Food and Share Credit on the SafeBoda App, you can now NOW SHOP!!,” the firm announced.

The Ugandan-built app now with a team in global tech headquarters in Europe and across Africa started off humbly with single rides, then later deliveries and most recently food but from the look of things, its product lineup just started.

“You can now effortlessly Shop at the tap of a button from the convenience of your phone on the SafeBoda App and have it delivered in minutes and get this, for FREE DELIVERIES this week only!!

From Milk & Bread to Groceries to Fruits & Veg and even the good ol’ well aged scotch on the rocks,” the firm announced.

Starting with transportation services, Singapore’s Gojek runs more than 20 services making it one of the biggest technology platforms serving millions of users in Southeast Asia. Like Gojek which has various solutions, for every situation. SafeBoda is growing to power users through everyday commotion solving every challenge in Africa.

We are excited to participate in the development of ride hailing ecosystems in Africa,” said Oliver Ullrich, Corporate Development Director at Allianz X. “SafeBoda has successfully established itself in the ride hailing market in Uganda and we look forward to supporting the company’s expansion into additional countries and services.”

Recently, SafeBoda announced it had signed up 3,000 drivers in Nairobi since its launch in the city and has announced a 40 percent cut in prices to pursue more users.

SafeBoda drivers promised to get its drivers smartphones and motorcycles financing from partners such as Watu Credit, Transsion among others while its commuters in Nairobi will enjoy rides of as low as 60 bob to avoid the crippling traffic.

Recently the firm added food, delivery, and payments to its platform, just weeks after launching in Nigeria, in a move that helps it complete the journey of becoming Africa’s super app, like its Asian counterpart Go-Jek.

Locally,, GoBEBA, an on-demand ecommerce logistics platform built by ex-Naspers and Amazon executives are disrupting the hyper-local on-demand logistics market in Kenya. Apart from GoBEBA, SafeBoda now takes on Barcelona’s Glovo, UberBoda, TaxifyBoda among others who are in the food and grocery delivery business.
