How to Stay Connected to the Outside World While at Home

Given that most people are trying to practice social distancing while at the same time trying to maintain as much of a sense of normalcy as possible, it’s important for people to try and keep connected to others and the outside world in general. And while every person might need a different dose of social interaction to stay happy, the commonality between nearly all of us is that we need something, and that a connection with the world around us is important for our mental health.

To that end, we are going to explore some ways for people to stay connected with others from home, whether they live alone or still have a large family. That way, people can remain safe and healthy for longer as the world figures out what to do next.

Here are a few key things to consider:

Now Is a Great Time to Update Your Setup

While its possible to stay connected with the outside world with little more than a basic laptop and smartphone, depending on the activities you want to perform, getting a better internet connection or a better webcam and microphone can make your online life a lot nicer for both you and the people you interact with. Whether you live in Arkansas or California, we recommend starting with finding an excellent internet connection.

Also, if you are going to be at your desk a lot more as a result of this, then you might want to find better furniture or even something like a better desk lamp to improve your working experience. You may not think these things make a difference now, but after making the change, you’ll wish you had done so earlier.

Create Experiences to Talk About at Home

Just because you are stuck at home doesn’t mean you have to live a boring life filled with nothing but work, TV, and mundane activities. Now is the time to start trying out all of your crazy ideas (so long as they’re not dangerous), creative pursuits, group activities and clubs that can be done remotely, and personal challenges.

Some options may include:

  • Read that epic novel you’ve been meaning to get around to. When are you going to get a better chance to read “Moby Dick” or “Infinite Jest”?
  • Start creating something or work on home crafts. Your home art piece can become a conversation topic and something to talk about, as silly as it might turn out.
  • Many people are creating home movies or trying to make fun videos to share with others. It’s a great excuse to try something new!
  • Experiment with broadening your horizons! There are plenty of classes being held remotely now, and all you need is a monitor, some sound, and a webcam for most of them.

Basically, anything beyond the standard lazing around on the couch and mindless media consumption will do. Try to schedule something in for yourself, and if you’re not having fun, just move along to the next thing.

Focus Less on Social Media and More on Direct Communications

While social media can be a great way to stay up to date with what is going on in other people’s lives, it simply isn’t a substitute for person-to-person communication. People are reconnecting across the world. Now is the perfect time to send a direct message, even if it has been a while.

Additionally, focusing on feeds and main social media pages can be distracting in all of the wrong ways. For many people, their social media feed is a way to get a distorted view of the world and cause anxiety for themselves. How much communication and fearmongering do you encounter on it daily? You do not need that in your life, especially now, and it will only make you feel disconnected.

Collaborate

As you might know already, one of the best ways to get closer to someone and feel more connected is to work with them, either for your main career or pursuing a creative passion. And thankfully there are plenty of options to help with that online, no matter your field. You may need to get creative in some regarding the specifics of collaboration, but we’re confident you can make it work.

We recommend reaching out to those with common interests first, and then considering online groups and boards if you want to meet and connect with new people.

Conclusion

People need to stay connected to one another and remain in contact with loved ones, and there’s no way around this simple truth. However, while before people might have been more despondent in these lockdown conditions we live in, there are now more options than we have ever had. We hope that you take advantage of them.
