SwypePay, which offers SMEs in Africa a payment platform to help them accept payments instore or online via a web interface and a mobile app, also aims to impact the lives of over 3 million people in Africa and around the globe through its service offerings and growing developer ecosystem.
“For us, it’s been tough since we have clients in the service industry, however, it has also tested the robustness of our platform. This is because we had to pivot and use our platform to distribute meal vouchers to vulnerable communities with the Food4education,” said Muriuki Collins, Founder and CEO, SwypePay. “But generally, in the wake of cashless payments as a preferred payment option, fintechs will thrive.”
For Food for Education, Muriuki’s software firm Terra Software designed a wristband called Tap2Eat. The wristband is linked to a virtual wallet that parents top up using their smartphones. The kids tap their wristbands to Food for Education’s mobile device to make a 15 cent contribution towards the cost of their lunch. Those who cannot afford to contribute, receive lunch for free.
Food for Education also uses the data collected to predict vulnerability based on the frequency of payments. Parents who failed to pay receive donations for grocery shopping among others.
With a focus on (Small and Medium Enterprises) SMEs across Africa, estimated to be about 400,000 in Kenya (SMEs) and 90,000 developers on the continent, SwypePay aims to end their pain by offering a superior payment experience coupled with thousands of merchant services into a one-stop-shop experience coupled with clever AI technology to help merchants across Africa to scale their businesses easily.

Four years ago, SwypePay, launched as an NFC-powered mobile payments platform but had to pivot after telcom giant Safaricom launched a similar NFC-payments platform dubbed M-PESA 1Tap. SwypePay then had a wallet that users can load money via credit card or M-Pesa for payments at events or POS terminals.
