Huawei has overtaken Samsung and Apple to become the largest smartphone maker in the month of April 2020 according to Counterpoint research.
This is the very first time Huawei has taken the lead. Huawei’s global smartphone shipments have since last year declined after the US ban. The top lead comes as a surprise. But to everyone’s surprise, the company has managed to achieve a feat that was considered impossible with the ban in effect.
Neil Shah, the VP of Research at Counterpoint confirmed Gizmochina that Huawei was the world’s number one smartphone maker with a 19% market share for a short period of time. The South Korean conglomerate had a market share of just 17% in the same period.
Huawei’s success has been attributed to the patriotic Chinese consumers who have given preference to the company’s products ever since the ban was imposed by the US government. Huawei’s dominance of its domestic market has given it more strength in meeting its target.
Despite the US sanctions that kicked in as early as last year may. The company has been doing exceptionally well in the past few quarters in China and other markets. Additionally, the lockdown in April, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, severely affected sales of Samsung in markets like India, the USA, Latin America, and parts of Europe.
The early lockdown in china also favoured Hauwei in that, when other countries going into lockdown China was recovering as Huawei’s key market, this was a big plus for its sales.
However, sales for the coming quarter maybe unpredictable there are equal chances for both companies to take the lead considering other markets globally are slowly picking up the next sales
