Ever heard of Group Kenya? There’s a high chance you follow it if you’re on Facebook.
In case you haven’t noticed the group has been deactivated. The group has existed for over 7 years now and it was suspended after it was suspended by a number of their members. The content was reported for being “objectionable content” which goes against the social media platform’s community standards.
What does Facebook consider as hate speech, violent, graphic content, adult nudity and sexual activity, sexual solicitation and insensitive content?
Facebook has the right to pull down posts and even deactivate an account when it goes against their guidelines and community standards.
Facebook said:
People can report potentially violating content, including Pages, Groups, Profiles, individual content, and comments.
Facebook also added:
The consequences for violating our Community Standards vary depending on the severity of the violation and the person’s history on the platform. For instance, we may warn someone for a first violation, but if they continue to violate our policies, we may restrict their ability to post on Facebook or disable their profile.
Kenyans have engaged in online wars with South Africans, Ugandans and Nigerians and has been reported to Facebook for violating some of the community standards.
Facebook said that they do not allow hate speech:
We do not allow hate speech on Facebook because it creates an environment of intimidation and exclusion and in some cases may promote real-world violence.
The page was accused of having sexual images that were provoking and even hurtful to others.
Nudity is not condoned by the page:
We restrict the display of nudity or sexual activity because some people in our community may be sensitive to this type of content. Additionally, we default to removing sexual imagery to prevent the sharing of non-consensual or underage content.
Facebook also added:
We believe that all people are equal in dignity and rights. We expect that people will respect the dignity of others and not harass or degrade others.
When the group was reached for a comment the administrator confirmed that the group had been suspended but on unclear claims that they did not accept.
The Group administrator wrote:
It is with heavy hearts that we confirm this information (that Group Kenya Facebook page has been suspended). The group was last night disabled by Facebook under claims of violating Facebook Community Guidelines on nudity.
They did not agree with the assessment and reassured their audience that they were still going to commit to providing them with relevant conversations even the difficult ones that would be hard to have under normal circumstances.
