But the flat cap is much more than a hat. It is a statement about the fearlessness and confidence of the cap wearer. Lastly, it is a prominent place in British history.  You can also check Hat Realm for more history about caps and hats.

The Story of The Flat Cap in Pages of History

Flat caps immerged 500 years ago in England. When they first came out, the cap was made of a single woolen piece of cloth and named as a bonnet.

The cap wasn’t very comfortable to wear hence quite unpopular. Until Queen Elizabeth-I’s government passed a law in accordance to wish every working man in Britain had to wear this cap. This law wasn’t to discriminate instead promote the use of local wool. Eventually, this rule was abolished, but until then, the cap had become popular amongst British citizens.

The 19th century was all about the upper-class society and the luxuries they could afford. The men wore cashmere coats and flat tweed caps. Other caps they wore were called the schoolboy cap and golf caps. The shape of these caps was similar to that of flat caps. The difference was because of the addition of paneling in the hat or button on the top.

In the 20th century, the caps again became popular, and this time it was across the British borders. The Irish called it the ‘newsboy caps,’ the reason being that the boys who used to sell newspapers wore these caps. They were also known as cabbie caps and baker boy cap- the caps name depended upon wearer’s profession.

These caps have always made a comeback whenever people thought their time is up. They’ve been styled sophistically by many actors and actresses. Some of them are Leonardo di Capri, Cameron Diaz, Hillary Duff, and many more.

Things to Consider When Buying a Peaky Cap

Peaky caps are the new ‘in,’ and everyone is rushing to get one for them.  If you want one to pair it with the perfect cashmere 3-piece suit, then don’t stop – but if you want to buy the ideal peaky cap. You should know these things:

The Cap Should Fit:

The flat cap should be snug around the side of the head of the wearer but not too tight. There should be enough room on the crown of the head even after it has been worn. It’s not like an ordinary cap that you can buy off the rack. If you want a good one, you have to get one stitched up according to your head measurements.

Traditional Fabrics are Unmatched:

The caps were made from wool and tweed fabric originally, and we suggest you do the same. These fabrics made the cap survive daily wear and tear for years. If you get a hat made from the latest materials, they might look good, but they won’t feel authentic or last for more than a year

Buy The Best Quality:

A high price doesn’t mean a good cap. You can get the most comfortable hat at a reasonable price from peaky blinders.

The cap is not just a fashion statement; it is a story that has been forgotten over time.
