Immaculate Kassait nominated as Kenya’s first Data Commissioner

Immaculate Kassait has been nominated the Data Commissioner Position by Kenya’s President Kenyatta.

The Speaker of the Kenya National Assembly, Justin Bedan Muturi, announced the nomination saying, “I wish to report to the house that I have received a message from the President seeking National Assembly’s approval for the appointment of Miss Immaculate Kassait as the Data Commissioner in accordance to provisions of Section 6 (4) of the Data Protection Act 2019.”

For the next two weeks, the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation will consider her appointment prior to submitting its report to parliament for the final approval.

Kassait will serve as Kenya’s first Data Commissioner. The position is set to last 6 years and will not be renewable thereafter.

Kassait was selected out of a pool of ten candidates shortlisted from 126 applicants. She was previously working at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in 2019 in the capacity of the Director of Voter Education and Partnerships. She was also the Director of Voter Education for close to a decade.
