While there are numerous articles written on how to avoid falling victim for the most common scams on the internet, there are limited resources available when it comes to understanding the behavior of scammers.
This article aims to provide reasons behind why some people scam other people. It is interesting to note that it isn’t always only about money. There are many other underlying reasons behind catfishing, trickery, and scamming. Let’s take a look at some of them below.
Cure for Loneliness – The first cause for catfishing schemes may be to address loneliness. People with antisocial tendencies often result in impersonating other individuals to forget about their misery. With too much time on their hands, some people get involved with treachery for the sole purpose of curing boredom and isolation.
Narcissism – Another common characteristic behind the scam is narcissistic behavior. Some people find a way to justify their superiority. Narcissistic personality disorder describes a lack of empathy and consideration for others –narcissists engage in a fraudulent activity because exploiting others hardly comes with any guilt or shame.

Boost Self-Confidence – Pretending to be someone else and receiving the attention for it can help a catfish forget about their own insecurities, even for just a moment. In the mind of a ‘catfish’, they can portray themselves to be more appealing to strangers or to people they fancy online if they are using someone else’s profile.
Fake Persona is their True Self. Although the younger generations today have been more open and accepting of “unconventional” practices –there are still others who engage in certain relationships strictly behind the screen. They feel more comfortable to be their true self as a fake persona compared to who they really are in “real life”.
Existence during the Pandemic – The COVID-19 virus is not the only thing in resurgence. Recent news states that there have been more opportunities to target more people during this time. With the shift in more people conducting business and work processes, catfishers have more of an advantage to catch bait with fraud and theft.
Poverty combined with high corruption. A major reason for committing scam is due to poverty. Many sources of fraud were traced to various developing countries where government corruption is prevalent. As the well-known saying goes “desperate times call for desperate measures” –con artists result in theft and fraud for their own survival.
