CcHUB buys Kenyan startup eLimu to launch a revamped digital education platform across Africa

iHub Ltd, owned by Co-creation Hub has acquired eLimu, a once-great edtech startup and digital educational content platform that worked closely with BRCK Education.

iHub will transform eLimu into the Digital Education Platform arm of the company and help create an interactive and engaging learning content platform customised for Africa.

According to eLimu Founder, Nivi Sharma, “I’m thrilled to see eLimu spread its wings across Africa to make learning fun and engaging for even more children. eLimu will continue to leverage its deep knowledge of the education system to tap into the opportunity to transform learning everywhere.”

The acquisition comes at a time when uLesson, Sim Shagaya’s edtech startup is moving to address infrastructure and learning gaps in Africa’s education sector targeting secondary school learners across the West African region. uLesson aims to deploy curriculum-relevant content via smartphones, that allows learners to use the product without concern for internet limitations and costs. uLesson is looking at academics, media & technology and the curriculum content is delivered via streaming and SD cards.

Based in Jos, Nigeria, uLesson has produced over 3,000 richly animated, personalised video learning modules, quizzes and tests that will be available on the uLesson android app, via a subscription model, in Q1 2020.

The entry of eLimu in Nigeria will see it contend with not just uLesson but a number of other great edtech platforms. eLimu was literally dead in Kenya or barely surviving in the Kenyan market. It’ll take more than money and the new CcHUB affiliation to sustain it.

eLimu was born and incubated at iHub and the eLimu founder has had close working relations with the iHub executive management. eLimu Africa, if that would be its pan-African name will have great minds behind it but what it is now is just a skeleton of what an edtech platform for Africa ought to be. Walk into any school 200 meters away from it’s office and no teacher or pupil knows eLimu safe for the countable pilot school spread across the city.

eLimu has partnered with BRCK Education, the education arm of BRCK, the software and hardware company that wants to get Africans online. eLimu’s mentorship from BRCK saw it survive the whirlwinds as several edtech startups called it a day due to the poor edtech infrastructure in the country at the moment.

The partnership saw the eLimu founder named president of BRCK Education and the two companies continued to collaborate. Unlike Eneza Education, eLimu hasn’t had much love and success in Kenya but this deal will enable it to scale beyond the borders.

BRCK and iHub were both co-founded by Erik Hersman who saw the acquisition of iHub by CcHub.

Whether eLimu is short-changing CcHUB or whether Tijani sees great potential in the eLimu product or brand is not important now. The future is bright and edtech in Africa is likely the next big thing after payments and logistics. Naspers, Africa’s media and internet conglomerate is pumping millions of dollars into edtech platforms globally.

‘Bosun Tijani, Chief Executive Officer, CcHUB says, “Education is the bedrock of healthy societies. As we continue to contribute to shaping the innovation ecosystem in Africa, accelerating the application of innovation and technology in improving education outcomes will be crucial to driving our overall agenda.”

This move reinforces CCHub’s commitment to continue to support innovations aimed at enhancing learning outcomes through the adoption of 21st-century learning methods in communities across the continent.

With his impressive track record in building high-performing and lucrative technology products for the Gaming industry, Abiola Olaniran will form part of the management team as eLimu’s Chief Technology Officer. Abiola is the Founder and CEO of Gamesole, one of the first Gaming companies in Africa. His experience in application development will play a key role in transforming eLimu into the leading digital educational content provider on the continent.

In August 2020, iHub opened the iHub Teachers’ Lounge, a space for Teachers to access training on 21st-century teaching skills such as content creation and online teaching tools for richer methods of teaching and collaboration in the classroom. Last month, eLimu was listed on the HolonIQ Africa EdTech50. HolonIQ is the most sophisticated education market datasets and intelligence platform in the world.
