29 licensed companies will offer a platform for cashless fare payment service.
COVID-19 has led many companies to cashless transactions and the matatu industry has not been left behind. Have you ever been to a matatu and the conductor refused a M-Pesa transaction? if this has happened to you then you probably won’t have to worry anymore considering the fact that NTSA is now in the middle of rolling out mobile and web applications for matatus in the country who can now sign up to go cashless.
After the ban of using cash in matatus a number of matatus have still not adhered to this rule but the plan is coming into fruition. Safaricom and a group of other lenders will be partnering with Public Service Vehicles (PSV) to properly implement this rule.
Cashless Payment in a Matatu
In a notice, National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA) said the licensed 29 companies will offer a platform for cashless fare payment service.
Other top firms that will offer the cashless fare system are
- Craft Silicon (makers of Little Taxi App)
- JamboPay
- Cellullant (a pan-African payments gateway firm)
- KCB Bank Kenya
- NCBA
So how will it work?
In an attempt to fight COVID the digital fare collection system will have the capability to contact trace passengers in the fight against the coronavirus disease.
Once the system is in place, all passengers will pay their fares via mobile money platforms. This will give the government access to your identities and personal contact information.
