How to change your alert sounds on Mac

When you’re trying to do something that isn’t allowed on your Mac, it responds with a loud, annoying alert sound. You can use System Preferences on your Mac to change the alert sound and its volume.

To get started:

  • click the Apple icon in the menu bar and choose the “System Preferences” option.
  • Navigate to the section called “Sounds.”
  • Here, from the “Sound Effects” tab, take a look at the “Select and Alert Sound” section.
  • To switch to it, pick a sound effect.  “Submerge” effect was a good balance between playful and soothing.
  • You can also reduce the alert volume so that the alert sound is not as jarring.
  • From the “Alert Volume” section, drag the slider to the left to reduce the alert volume.
  • And this is it. You’re done.
