How to Apply for a KRA Tax Refund Online

When you file your KRA Employment Returns with your P9 Form and Excel Sheet, a negative figure simply means you are due a refund from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).It is essential to understand How to Apply for KRA Tax Refund on iTax Portal in order to receive your KRA Refund in your bank account.

The following are the main documents you will need when applying for a tax refund from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

A mortgage certificate issued by a financial institution for claims relating to mortgage interest or a home ownership plan.

Insurance policy certificates are required for claims involving insurance relief.

Tax deduction card (P9 Form) for claims relating to excess PAYE deductions.

You must take the following steps to apply for a KRA tax refund:

Access to the KRA iTax Portal
Log in to the portal with your KRA PIN. 
After you’ve entered your PIN, click the ‘Continue’ button. 
Then enter your KRA iTax Password and answer the arithmetic question (security stamp). After that, click the ‘Login’ button.

After successfully logging in, you will be able to access your iTAx Account Dashboard, which is packed with useful features.

Select ‘Income Tax’ from the drop-down menu after clicking the ‘Refund’ button.

Fill out the KRA refund form with the necessary information.

Click the ‘Submit’ button to send your request.

You can download the refund acknowledgment receipt after submitting the refund application form for your records. You will be given a Refund Acknowledgement Receipt number, which you can use to track the progress of your Tax Refund application.

Tax refunds are typically issued in two ways, which are the same for all taxpayers, namely;
Paper cheques – A standard paper cheque is issued 
RTGS/NECS – A direct credit of the tax refund is made to the taxpayer’s bank account

If the KRA does not refund the entire amount, including VAT refundable, the amount will be deducted from your due tax when you file your income tax returns for the following year.

Keep in mind that the refund process takes 90 days after you apply for it on iTax and provide the necessary documentation.You will be given a Refund Acknowledgement Receipt number, which you can use to track the progress of your Tax Refund application.
