Fake COVID-19 Test Results Are Being Sold On The Darknet

Fake COVID-19 test results are being sold on the darknet.

Fake Covid-19 negative test results for $25 and fake vaccine certificate for $250, according to a research organisation Darknet is offering this and more.

An investigation conducted by the Check Point Research (CPR) has revealed that several websites of the Darknet are readily offering ‘authentic-looking’ vaccine certificates for a small price. All the user has to do is simply send their details and the money, and the seller emails back the fake documents, a report published by the research organization said.

People want the freedom to move around.

As the world struggles to inch back to normality, a negative Covid test result or a vaccination certificate is becoming the golden key that will unlock restrictions and enable people to move and mingle with greater freedom. This has created an opportunity for criminals and scammers to exploit those people who are willing to risk using fake documents to achieve that freedom.

As per the report, the Darknet is swarmed with advertisements for fake vaccine certificates, green passports, Covid19 negative test results and even Covid-19 vaccines.

Researchers at the CPR reportedly found several sellers online willing to manufacture, create and print to order ‘vaccine certificates’ to enable people to board planes, cross borders or for any relevant activity that requires a person to give proof that they have been vaccinated.

The need for a vaccine certificate rose from the relaxations introduced by several countries for vaccinated people. As a means to prepare society for restarting tourism, flights routine and border crossing, the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, has proposed a vaccination certificate to be used as the ultimate ‘door opener’ across countries and societies.

The commission suggested that EU citizens should be allowed to use a “digital green certificate” to prove that they have been vaccinated against the virus, that they have received a negative Covid-19 test, or they have recovered after contracting the coronavirus.

Faking it is not the only option on the Darknet. For those who really do want to get vaccinated and are willing to obtain it illegally, the Darknet has over 1200 sellers. However, the authenticity of these vaccines is dubious.

According to the report published by the CPR, multiple vaccine variants are for sale on the Darknet: AstraZeneca, Sputnik, SINOPHARM and Johnson & Johnson, with prices ranging between $500 and $1000 per dose. As per the research organization, the volume of such ads has gone up by 300 per cent within the last two months.

The vaccines advertised include Oxford AstraZeneca (at $500), Johnson & Johnson ($600), the Russian Sputnik vaccine ($600) and the Chinese SINOPHARM vaccine.
