In Kenya, How Do You Register a Car Number Plate?

To be allowed on the road in Kenya, all vehicles must be registered. For a long time, car registration was reserved for brokers and was considered extremely difficult. Fortunately, things appear to be taking a new shape, and you should have your plate ready in less than five days.

In Kenya, five different types of vehicle license plates can be registered. They include civilians, diplomats, local governments, parastatals, and generals. This article will focus on civilian plates, which have yellow plates in the back and white plates in front.

The documents required to register a vehicle.

  • A certified copy of the vehicle owner’s national identity card or a valid passport is required.
  • PIN card (Personal Identification Certificate Number)
  • Import Declaration Form for Bill of Lading or Airway Bill (IDF)
  • Receipts for duty and VAT
  • Form for importing entries (Form 63)
  • Foreign log book translated into English
  • Clean Findings Report (CRF)
  • Order for Port Release
  • The Commissioner of Customs and Excise grants permission to enter goods for personal use.
  • If the vehicle is for commercial use, a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) is required.
  • Receipt/License for a Foreign Vehicle
  • An Importation Document that is only valid for a limited time (Form C44A or C44)
  • In the case of vehicles imported by road, the road manifest or Carnet de Passages is used.
  • Form “A” duly completed and personally signed by the Importer.
  • Insurance cover

Once you’ve loaded up on the items listed above, you’ll need to make your way to the Times Towers location to register your vehicle.
