Discord Announces New Features As It Celebrates 6th Birthday

Discord announces new features as it celebrates its 6th birthday. Including stage channels which is similar to Clubhouse and will be available beginning June.

Discord is a voice, video and text communication service used by over a hundred million people to hang out and talk with their friends and communities. The platform was originally developed for gamers but since grown to become a general use platform for many kinds of communities

The new Stage discovery feature will allow a user to see a feed of public stage channels one might be interested in that is curated using machine learning. A user can listen to a stage channel audio right from the feed and if interested then hope from the room to be part of the audience and in the public room, and then there is also a link to join the Discord server, the place where the stage channel is being hosted.

The feature will be rolled out in June and will enable users the feed through a new stage channels icon available on the main tool bar in the mobile app and in the home menu on desktop.

According to Discord, stage channels can’t use profane language in their titles and descriptions and explicit, graphic, or sexual content is prohibited. Users can report stage channels that violate the rules. And to help prevent bad stuff from bubbling up the feed, the company will also enforce its policies through technology, Discords own trust and safety team and community moderation.

Discord is also developing a ticketed stage channel, thus hosts will be able to charge a fee for access to a stage channel. They will be rolling out this month, first in a pilot project with fewer than 50 US based creators.

The company plans to add the ability to make threads, which will enable to corral conversations. The company says discord will start rolling out this summer and will be available to all servers by the end of the year.

The company is also rolling out a new brand identity with a slightly tweaked logo called Clyde,a multi-purpose bot with an over 180 commands and perfect for managing a community or having some fun on discord.

The platform which was originally built as a place for gamers to hang out, has now grown significantly during the pandemic and has even attracted non-gaming communities start using to use the service.

Discord currently has 150  million monthly active users, up from 140 million in December.
