Snap has new AR glasses, and this time it’s capable of displaying augmented reality content directly in front of its users. Still using the name Spectacles, this fourth-generation product also carries a very different design.
His form is not as chic as previous generations. At first glance, it even looks like old-fashioned 3D glasses. But this won’t be a problem, as Snap has no intention of selling it to the public. Instead, these fourth-generation Spectacles will be distributed to several AR creators, hoping they can be more inspired to create even more interesting AR effects.
Technically, the new Spectacles packs a pair of 3D waveguide displays that allow users to see and interact with AR elements. The virtual object is presented with a field of view of 26.3 degrees, and the brightness level can reach 2,000 nits so that creators can still use it in broad daylight.
A pair of cameras are in charge of detecting nearby objects and surfaces, ensuring that the AR elements can appear more natural. Complementing the specifications are a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1 chipset, four microphones, two stereo speakers, a pair of touchpads on the left-right, and a battery that lasts up to about 30 minutes of use per charge. In total, the weight stands at 134 grams.
Story Studio
On the same occasion, Snap also announced a new iOS app called Story Studio. The app is specifically designed for editing vertical videos, with a complete editing tool and access to data on what’s trending on Snapchat. Snap developed this app for people who regularly create Spotlight content (Snapchat’s TikTok).
