Installing Rafiki By Securex Home Security System

Rafiki Home Security System or Rafiki by Securex is, as its name suggests, a home-security solution that is affordable enough for many households. It costs Ksh. 7540 (orders can be made here). That price should get you an alarm panel that looks like a router, a PIR motion sensor, a pair of magnetic contact, and one remote control. If you want an indoor camera, then the price goes higher to Ksh. 13782. If you want to buy the camera separately (assuming you have the basic kit), then it would cost you Ksh. 7750.

That aside, today we are going to talk about the installation process, which should be straightforward for most users because the company has attached a comprehensive set-up manual.

However, if you have tried to install it before but did not work, it advised that you reinstall the Rafiki app and start all over again.

If all fails, the team at Rafiki advises you to contact them (you can do so via Facebook or Twitter). They will then reach out to you via WhatsApp or phone call and guide you through the installation process.

If you are not into all that, then you can check out this process that we applied and worked for us quite well.

Installing Sensors

  1. Motion sensor. In the box, you will see the motion sensor (as labeled on the manual). Install the triple-A batteries provided, and set it up at a place in your house where you have a lot of foot traffic or where you think people would use to enter your house without permission. This can be at your front door or kitchen door. Note, you need two or more motion sensors if there are many vulnerable entry points in your home. Placing the motion sensor is quite easy because it comes with mounting brackets (the small green things and two screws).
  2. Magnetic Contact. These come in twos: a tiny magnetic contact and its sensor counterpart. From the diagram provided in the manual, it should be placed on your door where there is a likelihood of forceful entry. It can also be placed on a window. Your door or window has to somehow have a magnetic material for this to work. Wooden doors are therefore out of question. We also noted that the magnetic contact is not that strong, so you may need to improvise to make sure it works. Maybe glue the sensor alongside magnetic contact? This problem has also been identified with our friends that have found it challenging to install.
  3. Alarm Panel. This is the brain of all sensors. It basically controls them. However, its set-up is somehow challenging, so you may need to be keen and patient. To start, make sure you have the Rafiki by Securex app for iPhone or Android devices. Create your Rafiki account and log into it. The next step is about linking the panel to your Wi-Fi connection, but before you do that, ensure it is a 2.4 GHz connection (check your Wi-Fi settings on phone to make sure which connection you have installed. If it is a 5 GHz one, then don’t bother because it would not work). Then, make sure your Wi-Fi password has letters only – no special characters or numbers are needed here because the panel would not work. With those set, power your Alarm Panel, and turn it on using the button at the back. Head over to the Rafiki app, pick ‘auto scan’, and follow the instructions. During the scanning process, hit the CDDE button at the back of the panel for 3 seconds. Afterward, the panel should beep six times. Release the CDDE button, and the panel will flash to indicate it has been set to the network configuration state, so you can add the sensors set up earlier on.
  4. Adding Sensors. Open the app again, pick the panel that you want to add a sensor to, choose ‘device’, followed by ‘fast search’, and hit any button on your remote control to ensure that the sensor to be added is powered. Do that for the two sensors you have on (the connection is done via Bluetooth). You can then arm, disarm and play around with the sensors within the app.

As noted, the team at Securex can help you set it up if you somehow get lost. Otherwise, enjoy your new home security system.
