With Windows 11, Microsoft wants to do a lot better. However, many of the features shown are old hat for macOS users and only evoke a tired smile. The MacOs should be envious of one element – and they should be wondering how long they should wait until Apple finally fulfils this wish.

The Mac is more likeable, more thoughtful and easier to use. By saying goodbye to dusty Intel processors, Apple is probably also years ahead of the competition. So everything perfect in Mac land, vain sunshine? Not quite. Because there is a feature of Windows that I have also been missing for six years: proper window management.

How long should we wait for Apple?

Every year at WWDC, we hope that Apple will finally take heart and expand macOS with proper window management. Or even shorter: Copy everything that window management can do in Windows. Here, above all, the practical snap function is meant. Merely drag the window to the superiority of the screen – and as if by magic, the windows align themselves. Either split in two in split-view mode or even divided into four. Then each window occupies a quarter of the screen.

macOS has a very similar feature if you press the green button longer in program windows. But similar is not the same because this function creates a new space – i.e. a new desktop. If, on the other hand, you want to group the windows and stay in the same room, you have to use third-party tools such as Magnet as a macOS user.

And that only includes the features that Windows 10 has on it. In Windows 11, Microsoft has once again significantly drilled down the window management. Through “Snap Layouts”, the programs can be arranged individually on the monitor in windows. Thanks to “Snap Groups”, the system even remembers how the programs were distributed on an external monitor and automatically restores them to their original state when you plug the notebook back in. An ingenious feature.

So, Apple: Better well copied than badly self-made! Windows has “stolen” so many of your macOS features over the years – you are welcome to take revenge and take over the window management from the competition.
