Google Will Let Users Know When Search Results Are Unreliable

Google will let users know when search results are unreliable.

We turn to Google for every little thing we come across but not every time what the search results displays are reliable. Sometimes there could be more to what Google shows.

As part of the latest development, Google will let users know when the results around a topic are changing rapidly. Google in a blog post explained that it will suggest users check back the results around a topic that is new. This would particularly be true for breaking news or emerging topics.

When you spot breaking news, you might want to read about it online.

If the news is a follow-up to something that has happened previously, Google will show you links related to it. But if the story is completely new and nothing related to it has ever happened in the past, Google will tell you that the results about the topic are changing rapidly.

Danny Sullivan, Public Liason for Search, Google said in a blogpost :

“While Google Search will always be there with the most useful results we can provide, sometimes the reliable information you’re searching for just isn’t online yet. This can be particularly true for breaking news or emerging topics, when the information that’s published first may not be the most reliable. To help with this, we’ve trained our systems to detect when a topic is rapidly evolving and a range of sources hasn’t yet weighed in. We’ll now show a notice indicating that it may be best to check back later when more information from a wider range of sources might be available,”

Google will start displaying notices like:

“It looks like these results are changing quickly”. The note is followed by a message that says that if this topic is new, it can sometimes take time for results to be added by reliable sources.”

The company said that it has had similar notices since last year to let users know when Google hasn’t been able to find anything that matches the Search. Recently, an About This Result Panel was also announced by Google, which gives people information about sources they find on Google Search and better determine if they’re likely to provide helpful or trustworthy information. The additional context helps people in making a more informed decision about the sites that can be trusted.

Google will initially be rolling out the notices in the United States. The company plans to expand these and other related features over the coming months.
