How to Stop Default Browser Prompts in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera.

Currently, there are dozens of browsers on the market. Almost every one of these browsers wants to be the default on your computer. If you only use one browser, it won’t be a big deal. However, if you have more than one, the constant prompts to designate them as your computer’s default browser may irritate you.

In your browser, disable the “Set as Default Browser” prompts.

Nearly all modern gadgets, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, come with browsers pre-installed. Users usually have only one browser installed on their computer, which is set as the default. When they install a new browser, though, it prompts them to make it the default.

Surprisingly, if you make the freshly installed browser your default, the older one will urge you to do so the next time you use it. Having to deal with those prompts on a regular basis is quite inconvenient. The steps to disable default browser prompts in all main browsers are listed below.

Mozilla Firefox

  • On your PC, open Firefox and select the application menu icon.
  • Select Settings.
  • Uncheck the box that says “Always check if Firefox is your default browser” under General settings.

Firefox will no longer prompt you to make it your default browser once you’ve completed this step.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has completely revamped its Edge browser, which is now based on the Chromium project. Because Edge uses the same engine as Chrome, it performs similarly. In Chrome, the method of turning off the make default prompt is very similar.

Simply press the X icon on the right side of the prompt to dismiss it. There is no option to turn it off fully in the settings. The easiest method to get Edge to understand that you don’t want to use it in your default browser right now is to close the prompt a few times.

Google Chrome

Chrome, which is owned by Google, has the most market share. Chrome is the most popular browser among users. If you use another browser as your default alongside Chrome, it will prompt you to make it your default anytime you open it.

Unfortunately, there is no way to disable these prompts in Chrome. The only choice left is to tap the X icon each time the prompt appears. After a few dismissals, Chrome will figure out that you don’t want it to be your default and will cease giving prompts.

Opera

Some of you may have downloaded Opera and tried it out a few times. And you might have noticed the prompt to set Opera as your default browser every time you opened it.

There is no option in the settings to disable the obnoxious prompt, like there is in Chrome and Edge browsers. As a user, your only option is to tap the X icon next to the prompts whenever they appear. After a few instances of denying it, Opera will stop nagging you.

Only Firefox, out of the four most common browsers, can entirely disable the make default prompt. Users of Chrome, Edge, and Opera must dismiss these alerts each time they receive them. After a few rejections, the browsers will no longer ask you to make them your default.
