Mark Zuckerberg authorizes the partnership between Ray-Ban and Facebook for the making of connected glasses

Last year, Facebook announced that it was partnering with Ray-Ban to launch its first pair of connected glasses. Mark Zuckerberg recently confirmed that this would be the company’s following product.

These glasses will be the first product resulting from the work of the social media giant in the field of connected glasses.

A conventional design, but “advanced” functions

The officialization comes from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who confirmed the upcoming collaboration during his conference call on the second quarter financial results: “Looking to the future, the next product release will be the launch of our first Ray-Ban smart glasses in partnership with EssilorLuxottica,” he said. “

Unfortunately, we do not have accurate information about the release schedule, but we know that the device will look like ordinary glasses. Zuckerberg added that “the glasses have their iconic shape and allow you to do some exciting things.” So we think of models with the design of the famous Wayfarer or Aviator.

It remains to be seen what he means by “exciting things.” Recall that last year. Facebook confirmed to The Verge that “the device will not be classified as an augmented reality device.” It is also known that there is no built-in screen of any kind.

A first attempt to prepare for the future?

While these connected glasses are not considered augmented reality glasses, they are still part of Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), the company’s research and development department for augmented reality technologies.

Therefore, there is a good chance that the data and feedback gathered by these glasses could be used for the Aria project, authentic augmented reality glasses that the company is currently experimenting with.

According to rumors, the glasses resulting from the collaboration with Ray-Ban could be similar to Snapchat’s Spectacles glasses, with an onboard camera. In January, the launch of these glasses was anticipated for the year.
