Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the company is working on a robot that will work as a personal servant.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk after foraying into space and the automobile industry said that the company is now working on a humanoid robot. A prototype of the robot will be built sometime next year.
Musk revealed that the humanoid robot, called the Tesla Bot, will use most of the tools used in Tesla vehicles such as sensors, cameras and various other devices to navigate the outside world.
Tesla’s humanoid robot will tolerate the height of an average human.
It will be 5 feet 8 inches tall. However, instead of a face, there will be a screen. It will weigh around 125 pounds and will be able to run at 5mph. The Tesla website has already listed the robot. It says the humanoid robot will be capable of performing “unsafe, repetitive or boring” tasks. Tesla is seeking the help of mechanical, electrical, control and software engineers to help the company leverage its AI expertise beyond its vehicle fleet.
Tesla is the largest robotics company in the world.
Musk said during Tesla’s first AI day that building robots are a logical next step for Tesla as it is already the largest robotics company in the world.
He said:
“We are making pieces that will be useful for humanoid robots, so we should probably build that. If we don’t, someone else will – and we want to make sure it’s safe,”
The humanoid robot Tesla is working on could replace manual labour as it would be used for household chores, according to the company. Musk said it can be used for things that are repetitive, boring or unsafe. The work that people are least interested in doing. He said that robots will change the future of work.
He said:
“This, I think, will be quite deep. Inevitably, in the future, physical labour will be an option. If you want to do it, you can, but you won’t need to,”
Musk said the robot could be a friend and hopes it won’t be seen as “dystopian.”
