Amazon officially launches in Egypt, replacing the e-commerce company Souq.

Amazon has launched its own website in Egypt, replacing e-commerce company Souq.com.The global marketplace site purchased the Middle Eastern retailer Souq.com in 2017 and has been rebranding it across the region ever since.

Souq, which was founded in 2005, is the Middle East’s largest English-Arabic language e-commerce platform. It operated in seven countries, representing over 135 million people, until it was purchased by Amazon.It provided sellers with ongoing support by allowing its professional team to handle issues through its service center, allowing users to create accounts to sell their goods, and taking care of sipping for them.

Starting on Wednesday, all existing Souq.com customer identities, wish lists, orders, delivery locations, payment methods, and customer support inquiries in Egypt will be transferred to new Amazon.eg accounts.

The news comes just one day after Amazon opened a new warehouse in the Sharqia Governorate’s 10th of Ramadan City, bringing Amazon’s total investments to 1 billion Egyptian pounds ($63.6 million).

According to Al Arabiya, the company employs over 3,000 people and runs over 15 distribution stations across the country, according to Ronaldo Mouchawar, vice president for the region.

He pointed out that when it comes to Amazon’s investments on the African continent, the Egyptian market is at the top.
