Canon Central and North Africa and the Text Book Centre (TBC) recently hosted the Canon Academy Juniors Funday at Nairobi’s TBC Sarit Centre branch. Canon collaborated with TVC to provide junior learners in Kenya with practical and impactful skills.

Children at the Funday were treated to photography lessons through a short course and workshops aimed at encouraging and empowering them with practical knowledge as part of a joint initiative dubbed Canon Academy Junior.

The course is designed to pique the artistic interests of young learners aged 8 to 16. The program, which began in July of this year, is being run in two consecutive cycles, with each cycle consisting of two age groups. The first round included fourteen children aged eight to twelve, and eleven children aged thirteen to sixteen. The second round includes eleven children between the ages of 8 and 12, as well as ten children between the ages of 13 and 16.

Enrolled students had the opportunity to attend four Saturday sessions where they could explore their imaginations through learning visual arts and photography.

The kids were also able to try out professional cameras and equipment from Canon, which helped them hone their photography skills. The course teaches students how to use a camera with ease and efficiency, as well as the fundamentals of photography such as light, composition, and background.

Joy Okumu, TBC’s Head of Retail, said at the Funday at Sarit, “Our partnership with Canon has made photography skills more accessible to the younger generation.” This is consistent with our commitment to play a critical role in ensuring equal access to education and cultural materials for all. Through these classes, we hope to see more children develop and hone their photography skills, as well as empower them to take advantage of opportunities that their skills may provide in the future.”

Canon Academy Juniors anticipates that kids will not only pick up new hobbies, but will also gain confidence in taking their own photographs and using the camera on their own in the future. Finally, students had the exciting opportunity to display their artwork at the Canon Academy Juniors Fun-day.
