DataPathology, a Casablanca-based medtech platform that offers online pathology consultations, has raised $232,000 in its latest funding round, which was led by WitamaxOne, an investment business backed by Southbridge A&I and AXXAM Family Office.
DataPathology was founded in 2020 by pathologist Dr Hicham El Attar and his partner Mohammed El Khannoussi to fight the absence of and delay in cancer diagnosis in medically underserved countries. The Moroccan team wants to provide pathology diagnostics to patients in a timely and secure manner. A procedure that entails performing a biopsy, scanning the patient’s digital file, and securely and anonymously uploading the patient’s digital file to the medical team for diagnosis.
Despite a 30% drop in VC funding invested in the Healthcare sector throughout the first half of 2021, healthcare startups across EVMs saw a 24% increase in transactions closed. In Mena, the Healthcare industry closed half as many agreements in FY 2020 as it did in FY 2020, owing to deal momentum in locations such as the UAE and Egypt, which accounted for 66% of all transactions closed in H1’21.
Pathologists and digital professionals make up the Datapathology team, which develops and distributes digital solutions to enable customers deliver pathological diagnostics remotely in a timely, safe, and efficient manner. The team builds partnerships with key players in the digital pathology market, such as scanner, image processing, and artificial intelligence entities, through a network of renowned Moroccan and international pathologists, to develop and implement high-performance diagnosis solutions curated for each patient case.
