As rumours continue to spread about a possible Apple car in the near future, the company that actually assembles the phones went ahead and unveiled its first electric vehicles. Foxconn is famously known for its manufacturing prowess and it assembles many everyday electronics from iPhones to gaming consoles including the Sony Playstation and the Microsoft’s Xbox.
During the Hon Hai Tech Day 2021 event, Foxconn revealed their 3 upcoming electric vehicles, the Model C crossover, Model E sedan and the Model T bus. If this names sound familiar, it’s because they are, Model C and Model T were used by Ford in the early ages of the automotive industry. Ford didn’t release a Model E, but they filed an application to trademark the name back in 2013.
Not much was revealed about the cars specifications, but Foxconn stated that the Model C crossover will be capable of accelerating from a 0 to 62 mph (0-100 kilometers per hour) in just 3.8 seconds. It also added that it will have a projected range of around 435 miles (700 kilometers) per full charge. The Model E sedan will be even quicker, from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds thanks to a 750 horsepower (kilowatts) output. The cars are expected to go on sale by 2023 starting with Taiwan.
The three cars will be co-developed with Taiwanese automaker Yulon Motor Co Ltd. The iPhone manufacturer, Foxconn, acquired a former factory of the Lordstown Motors startup in the United States where it where it plans to assemble the cars. It seems that its other acquisition of a chip plant in Taiwan will also play a part in this development.
