Volkswagen unveils ID 5, an all electric coupe with a GTX variant

Volkswagen (VW) has taken the wraps off its latest electric vehicle, the ID 5. It is essential a coupe version of the ID 4 SUV , with the same wheel base and overall dimensions apart from the sloppy coupe rear.

The front part of the ID 5 keeps the same style elements as the ID 4, that is, a faux grille and a lighting bar that stretches the width of the vehicle. The rear is where the ID 5 gets its own identity, the sloppy back gives it the coupe distinction, but it also eats up some of the interior space for rear seating passengers – by only 12mm. The trunk and cargo space are now 19.38 cubic feet (549 liters) with the rear seats up and 55.12 cubic feet (1,561 liters) with the seats down compared to ID 4’s 30.3 (848 liters) and 64.2 cubic feet (1,817 liters) respectively.

The ID 5 has a 77-kilowatt-hour pack and three trims: Pro, Pro Performance and the top tier GTX.

The Pro and Pro Performance models have one electric motor at the rear (rear wheel drive) delivering 171 horsepower and a 10.4-second sprint from 0-62 mile-per-hour (100 kph) for the Pro variant. The Pro Performance, on the other hand, produces 201 hp and takes 8.4 seconds to reach 62 mph. Both have a top speed of 99-mph (160-kph). At the top, ID.5 GTX gets a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration that outputs 295 hp propelling the EV crossover to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds with a max speed of 111 mph (180 kph).

With only one motor, the Pro and Pro performance have up to 323 miles (520 kilometers) of range on Europe’s forgiving WLTP testing methods. GTX’s two motors reduce the range to 298 miles (480 km) per full charge.

Inside the ID 5, you get the familiar touchscreen infotainment system and digital driver display of other ID cars. However, VW has stated that this new coupe will have updated software which will make the touchscreen more responsive after previous ID customers complained about the not-so-ideal heating control touch inputs.

Pricing and availability details will be released closer to launch. It is, however, expected that the ID 5 will arrive in European markets sometime next year.
