Toyota and Volkswagen among big automakers that miss out on UN’s COP26 zero emissions pledge

UN Climate Change Conference was held at Glasgow, UK for the 26th time hence the name COP26 (Conference of Parties) with the aim of getting governments and automakers to “work towards reaching 100% zero emission new car and van sales in leading markets by 2035 or earlier” Giant automakers including Ford, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Cars signed the pledge but other key players in the industry skipped it.

Toyota, Volkswagen, Renault-Nissan, Hyundai-Kia and Stellantis were absent from the list. Stellantis owns major brands such as Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Citroën, Fiat, Peugeot, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

Volkswagen argued that the COP26 proposal wouldn’t work for countries that do not have electric vehicle infrastructure or renewable energy sources. They made a statement saying that they are fully committed to electrification, however, their pace will differ from region to region depending on “local political decisions driving EV and infrastructure investments”.

“Furthermore, we believe that an accelerated shift to electro-mobility has to go in line with an energy transition towards 100 percent renewables,” they added.

On the other hand, Toyota stated that it “operates as a business in more than 170 countries worldwide and has consistently achieved industry-leading vehicle CO2 reductions. This is based on developing and bringing to market a full lineup of electrified vehicles to expand the options for reducing CO2 practically and sustainably – including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.”
