If you need help diagnosing a problem with your Windows 11 PC, or if you need help from your administrator, a good place to start is by exporting a list of currently-running processes for investigation.
You can view a list of currently running processes in Task Manager. The issue is that there is no direct way to export that list from Task Manager. You’ll need to use Command Prompt to accomplish this.
- To begin, launch Command Prompt as an administrator. Click the Windows Search icon in the taskbar, type “Command Prompt” into the search bar, right-click the Command Prompt app in the search results, and then select “Run as Administrator” from the context menu.This command returns a list of this information about each process:
- Image Name
- Process ID (PID)
- Session #
- Mem Usage
- Session name
- The actual output will be much longer than this, but here is an example:
- If you want to export this list as a TXT file, use the following command:
- You can rename the text file services list to whatever you want.
- Your TXT file is now complete. This file can be found in File Explorer on your Windows (C:) drive. Navigate to “Windows (C:),” and then find the “services list” (or whatever name you gave it) text file.
- You can open the file by double-clicking it or sending it to your administrator for further investigation.
- This is a convenient way to obtain a quick copy of your output for easier reading and sharing with your team. This list of running processes isn’t the only thing you can save as a text file; you can export almost any output.
