How to Sell Yourself in a Video Interview

Congratulations on getting the interview for your dream job! Best of all, because the interview is virtual, you won’t have to worry about driving or parking.

However, there is still much to consider when preparing for a video interview. If you make mistakes or appear unprofessional, you may lose the opportunity to do the job you want.

In a video interview, how do you sell yourself?

Here are some helpful tips.

  • Get in front of the camera in a well-lit and quiet environment.

When conducting video interviews,  make sure to do so in a quiet area of your home or in a private office in a coworking space. Make sure to turn off your phone and music to avoid distractions. Also, because you’ll be going on camera with your laptop or desktop, make sure you’re in a well-lit room so the interview panel can see your face clearly.

  • Dress appropriately

Even in a video, you want to make a good first impression. Dress as if you were going to a face-to-face interview. Wear a well-dressed outfit from head to toe. Although they won’t be able to see you from the waist down, dressing for the interview will boost your confidence. Don’t overdress or overaccessorize with jewelry. Semi-formals are always a safe bet. Keep in mind that you must appear presentable and professional.

  • Be upbeat and enthusiastic. You should be yourself.

To sell yourself in a video interview, you must demonstrate your genuine and upbeat personality. Begin by extending a warm welcome to the interviewer. While you must boost your confidence and optimism, you must also present the true you. Simply be yourself. This way, both you and the interviewer will be able to determine whether or not you would fit in well with the company’s culture.

  • Take note of your body language.

Treat the video interview in the same way that you would a face-to-face interview. Sit up straight, but not so straight that it becomes uncomfortable. You should not have anything in your mouth, such as chewing gum. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer and smile every now and then. Do not fidget or fiddle with your hair or pen.

  • Provide concise responses.

There is a chance that the network connection will be interrupted, which means that the audio will be subpar. As a result, make sure the interviewer can hear you clearly by speaking out loud. Also, make certain that you provide adequate responses.

  • The finish on a high note

With a smile, thank the interviewer for their time and for giving you the opportunity at the end of the interview. Send a thank-you note to them within 24 hours of the interview. Thank them and let them know you’re looking forward to hearing from them. Showing your appreciation and enthusiasm can help you land your dream job.

If you follow the advice above, you will be able to sell yourself more effectively during a virtual interview. This will help you make a better first impression, which will lead to more job offers.
