OPPO Reno 7 4G Test: A smartphone of choice for less than KSH 45,000

Another year and a new vintage for the OPPO Reno series. We’re testing the OPPO Reno 7 4G today, which is the natural successor to the OPPO Reno 6. The Chinese manufacturer enhances the recipe while retreating on others in certain aspects. So, how much is the vintage of 2022 worth? Read this article to the end to know the answer

If you like playing the game of challenging your brain, comparing the technical specifications of the OPPO reno 7 4G with the Oppo reno 6 will be a lot of fun. The CPU, which switches from a MediaTek Mediatek to a Snapdragon, and the battery, which decreases its fast charging speed from 65W to 33W while maintaining its capacity at 4,500 mAh, are the two most noticeable differences between these OPPO smartphones.

In the OPPO Reno 7 4G Packaging:

OPPO seems to be becoming more frugal when it comes to putting accessories to the green cardboard boxes of its smartphones, as seen by the model in our test. There are no earbuds as usual,

  • The smartphone
  • User manuals
  • Transparent plastic back cover
  • A SIM card eject tool
  • A USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable
  • 33W SuperVOOC charger

Design

OPPO has virtually identically copied the lines of its two previous Reno models and made improvements with its new OPPO Reno 7. This isn’t a negative thing at all because, in the end, you will appreciate the ever-changing colors at the back of the device. The phone is enormous without intimidating and substantial without overly heavy (175 grams). In short, a phone that exudes confidence once held.

The picture module is incorporated into the shell, yet it protrudes enough from the phone’s rear to make it wobble. An excellent grip is provided by flat edges with gently rounded edges thanks to its matte finish. The power button can be seen on the right, while the volume control buttons are located on the phone’s left side. Above the volume rockers, the sim card tray is located

There is nothing to report on the top, but on the bottom edge, there is a primary microphone, USB type c Slot, and a Mono speaker grille that allows the sound from the speaker to flow through.

Everything is IPX4 certified for total protection against dust and immersion in water up to one meter. The 6.43-inch screen, made of Gorilla Glass 5, does not allow one-handed phone use. At least for smaller hands.

Screen

The OPPO Reno 7 4G is equipped with a 6. 43 inches 90  AMOLED panel with Full HD+ definition and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The maximum brightness, located around 800 cd / m2, is more than enough to use the smartphone comfortably in direct sunlight and compensate for the reflections inherent in this glossy slab. Another important aspect is that Reno 7 offers Amazon Prime Video HD and HDR Certification. The screen mode is set to Vivid by default, thus offering unnatural colors flattering to the eyes. If you want a more accurate rendering, we recommend that you constantly adjust the white balance to your liking for a warmer or colder rendering. Without achieving the perfection of the brand, the OPPO Reno 7, 4G is another proof of the know-how the OPPO brand puts first in its display quality. A slab that does not have to blush in the face of much more generous competition.

Performance

Samsung is changing its shoulder gun by abandoning MEDIATEK processors to favor one of Qualcomm processors: the Snapdragon 680, accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM. For this particular model, only one storage and RAM variant are available.

Let’s start with the basics: the phone’s responsiveness daily, especially the interface. On this point, the  OPPO Reno 4G is not faultless. Indeed, we notice some slowness, especially when searching for an application from the launcher or when displaying the virtual keyboard before writing a text. Nothing dramatic rest assured we are talking about a maximum of one second here. However, if you are used to a very responsive phone, which is our case, you will see the difference right away. On the benchmarks side, the OPPO Reno 7  sometimes does better, sometimes worse than its predecessor and its MediaTek MT6877 Dimensity 900. On Geekbench, for example, the multi-core score remains to the advantage of last year’s Reno 6 5G. The graphics part is provided by the  Adreno 610. We couldn’t resist the urge to launch a few greedy games from the Play Store.

So, we played Call of Duty Mobile, which, by default, offers “average” graphics quality with a “very high” frame rate per second. If you want to climb higher in FPS, you will have to go through a “low” graphics level again. The game is perfectly fluid in these conditions and allowed us to win a few games without problems.

Audio

The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is equipped with a monaural sound that delivers very close to last year’s models. Not enough to turn your phone into a portable speaker, but enough to watch YouTube videos or introduce a piece of music to your loved ones. The best thing is that the power is there (all proportions kept), and as always, the bass and treble are set back compared to the mids. At this price range, the manufacturer managed to incorporate, but if that is not your thing, as no earphones are included in the box, you can choose to go wireless thanks to the Bluetooth 5.1 connection.

Camera

The photo configuration of the Reno 7 is almost identical to that of the Reno 6 :

  • Wide-angle: 64 megapixels, f/1.7
  • Macro: 5 megapixels, f/3.3
  • Depth: 2 megapixels, f/2.4

However, this does not mean that OPPO has not changed anything. Indeed, welcome changes seem to have been made to the software processing.

Keep checking on this article as we dig deeper into this in the coming weeks.

Video

The Reno 7 can shoot up to 4K(seen by the 5G models), but for this particular version on our table, we have 1080p at 30 fps. The stabilization is correct without being excellent. On the other hand, the transition from one light exposure to another is mastered

Battery Life

OPPO has beefed up its game this year as far as the Autonomy of this smartphone is put into consideration. We have a 4500 mAh battery in the Galaxy OPPO Reno 7 4G. The phone can quickly go up to 100% from 0% in less than 30mins and what is more interesting is that its battery life can take you up to 2 days when only performing essential duties with the phone.

Price and availability, and competition

The OPPO Reno 7 4G  is available in two colors: Cosmic Black and Sunset Orange. Here are the recommended prices for the following configuration :

  • 8 GB of RAM + 256 GB of storage:  KES 42,999

Prices that position the Reno 7 4G in front of the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, Redmi 10(2022), or the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G.

The OPPO Reno 7 4G is an excellent choice if you are looking for a balanced mid-range smartphone under KSH 45,000 that will take advantage of software novelties for the next four years.
