South Africa is the first African country to get Disney+.

Disney+, Walt Disney’s streaming service, has entered the African market. Disney+ debuted in South Africa earlier this week, joining a growing number of competitors in the region, including Showmax, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video.

The Walt Disney Company, which operates Disney+, stated in January that it will expand to 42 new countries, including six in Africa: Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and South Africa.

Internet availability in Africa is enticing for investors.

This arrival is a significant vote of confidence for the continent, which has historically been the last to receive such services. Increased internet availability across Africa has enticed investors to bring more products to the region.

Disney+ will be South Africa’s most economical streaming alternative, with a monthly membership price of $7.4. Showmax costs $14.14 per month, whereas Amazon Prime Video costs $8.55 per month.

South Africa’s most popular pay-on-demand provider, DSTV, has been losing customers at an alarming rate.

Following the removal of several athletic channels from its bundle last year, it allegedly lost over 100,000 high-value members. However, unlike Disney+, Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video, it still has the advantage of not requiring internet access.

In 2019, Disney+ was introduced in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. It has over 137.7 million customers in 64 countries.
