BMW unveils the iX1, an all electric compact SUV

BMW unveiled the new lineup of its X1 compact SUVs and with it came along an all electric variant, the iX1.

In a configuration they call xDrive30, the iX1 comes with two electric motors – one for each axle – which enables all wheel drive but there will also be a front-wheel-drive variant in the future.

The motors produce a combined output of 230kW (313hp) and 494nm (364 lb-ft) of torque propelling the iX1 from 0 to 100km in 5.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 180km/h (112mph).

The fully battery powered BMW iX1 offers 438km of range between charges based on the European WLTP metric, this comes from 64.7kWh of usable battery. The pack supports DC charging up to 130kW and can fill up from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes, or add 120km in just 10 minutes on the charger. Home AC charging is supported at 11kW that can top up the battery pack in six and a half hours or an optional 22kW that cuts that time to just below four hours.

Dimensionally, the X1 lineup is slightly larger than its predecessor. The added dimensions brings more room in the cabin and 45 liters of extra trunk space. That’s a good addition since unlike other electric vehicles which have boot space at the bonnet, the iX1 does not have that.

Speaking of the cabin, the BMW iX1 features a dual-screen infotainment system with a 10.25-inch information display for the driver and a 10.7-inch control display in the middle which offers access to the new iDrive 8 infotainment system. Below the screens is the wireless charging console that also integrates wireless smartphone control.
