Apple CarPlay latest update plans to take over your entire car dash

Apple may be facing delays on its electric car project but it isn’t resting on its effort to turn the dashboard of other vehicles into full CarPlay affairs.

At the 2022 World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) , Apple previewed its latest update of CarPlay based on the upcoming iOS 16. This next iteration will allow CarPlay to take over not only your center infotainment display but also the drivers instrument cluster. Through a secure connection to monitor real-time vehicle systems, Apple CarPlay will display gauge cluster functions such navigation, speed, rpm, fuel levels, battery levels, and outside temperature.

There will be different layouts to choose from. The company showed various versions of the gauge cluster as examples, noting the designs will range from traditional-looking round gauges to modern bar graphs. The colors, backgrounds, and dial treatments can be changed to the drivers preference.

The centre displays will have an interface that looks like an iPad home screen. The new CarPlay will enable customers to add widgets to the center screen and also the gauge cluster. Apple said the system can adapt to different screen sizes automatically just like Google latest Android Auto update.

So far Apple has partnered with multiple automakers to integrate CarPlay into their cars, they include Land Rover, Mercedes, Benz, Porsche, Nissan, Ford, Lincoln, Audi, Jaguar, Acura, Volvo, Honda, Renault, Infiniti, and Polestar.

The iPhone maker will announce next year the specific models that will have the new CarPlay.

According to Apple, 98% of vehicles sold in the U.S. today have Apple CarPlay, however, the company never cited the source of that information.
