Customizable Lockscreen

The most significant update in iOS 16 is the ability to personalize the lock screen. Indeed, with iOS 16, the lock screen takes on a multi-layered effect, placing the subjects of the photos in front of the time for an impression of depth. Different typefaces and colors may be used to modify the date and time. You can add useful widgets like calendar events, weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more inspired by the Apple Watch.

To customize the lock screen, just press and hold the lock screen and press Customize to find yourself in the editor. For developers, WidgetKit is now available to create lock screen widgets.

Scrollable Notifications

Notifications now scroll from the bottom as you receive them, giving you a clear view of your custom lock screen. iOS 16 also offers a new notification style called “Live Activities”: a hybrid formula between a notification and a widget. So you can follow a race or an Uber directly from the lock screen, for example.

Concentration mode

The Concentration mode has also been improved in iOS 16: it has become more powerful and easier to configure and use and now connects to the lock screen. Thanks to the integration of several lock screens, you can link the wallpaper and widgets to a specific user profile or activate a profile by swiping to the relevant lock screen.

iMessage and SharePlay

iMessages also benefits from essential improvements that many users should find helpful. For example, it is possible to edit or recall recently sent messages, retrieve recently deleted messages, and mark entire conversations as unread so that you can return to them later.

SharePlay, a feature that Apple added in iOS 15, is also improved in iOS 16. On the menu: better integration of the tool with FaceTime, with a section that shows all the applications installed on your device compatible with SharePlay.

Grouped Tabs and password-free authentication

Tab groups, added for the first time in iOS 15, will now be able to be shared with loved ones, who will see what you are viewing. Safari also integrates Passkeys, which are supposed to replace passwords. These are unique digital keys, easy to use, more secure, and never stored on a web server. Passkeys remain on your device, which prevents hackers from stealing them. They can be used with Face ID or Touch ID for verification and sync between your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV) via the end-to-end encrypted iCloud keychain. Passkeys can be used for applications and on websites that support this technology.

iCloud shared photo library

The iCloud Shared Photo Library is a separate library where up to six users can collaborate, giving families and groups of friends a new way to share photos seamlessly. Each person involved in the process can get the same permissions for adding, sharing, and deleting photos.

You can share all the photos from your photo library, or select them according to the time the photos were taken, a start date, or even the people in the photos. For example, all the photos of you, your spouse, and your child.

CarPlay

According to Apple, the next iteration of CarPlay tends to change how people interact with their vehicles. From now on, CarPlay will therefore be able to support multiple screens in the vehicle.

You can control the radio or the air conditioning via CarPlay. Using the vehicle’s data, the application will display the speed, the fuel level, or the temperature of the passenger compartment on the dashboard.

These new CarPlay features will be supported by Ford, Jaguar, Nissan, Volvo, and Land Rover.

Apple keyboard

The keyboard remains open when dictation is used, making it easier to switch from voice to touch as the text is being constructed. Punctuation will also be added automatically to longer messages.

iOS 16 also includes a minor (but notable) new feature for the on-screen virtual keyboard. For the first time, you will find a new option in Settings that activates haptic feedback when you type. This has been a popular feature of third-party keyboards on iOS for years; Apple now includes it natively to your iPhone.

Fitness app

In iOS 16, the Fitness+ app is available to all users to help them track and achieve their fitness goals, even if they don’t use an Apple Watch. iPhone users can set a daily Move goal in the Fitness app and see how their active calories will help them close their Move ring.
