Sony revealed at the start of 2022 that it was looking for partners to enter the EV industry after showcasing two electric cars, the Vision-S 01 sedan and the Vision-S 02 SUV. That quest ended in early March when it decided to partner with Honda. The result was a 50:50 joint venture that would run independently. Initially, it was simply referred to as the “New Company,” but now the official name is being revealed, Sony Honda Mobility Inc. The company will launch before the end of this year with its headquarters in Tokyo.
Sales of EVs are expected to start in 2025, the same year that mobility services from Sony and Honda will also go on sale. While there are currently few other details, the press release does obliquely outline how the two firms’ respective roles will be divided.

Sony, in the other hand, will contribute its “expertise in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies, to realize a new generation of mobility and services for mobility that are closely aligned with users and the environment and continue to evolve moving forward.”
