Will you buy digital clothes for your avatar?
Meta is launching a digital designer clothing store called the Meta Avatar Store that will let you buy digital clothes for your avatars. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerburg made the announcement in an Instagram Live with Instagram’s Vice President of fashion partnerships Eva Chen.
The store will begin rolling out next week and will in the meantime offer digital outfits from Balenciaga, Prada and Thom Browne. Zuckerberg said Meta will make the store an open marketplace for developers to create and sell clothing. The free clothing options for the avatars will remain available for use.
“We’re launching our Avatars Store on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger so you can buy digital clothes to style your avatar. Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy. I’m excited to add more brands and bring this to VR soon too. Eva Chen and I tried out some of the new looks from Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne – a change of pace from my terrycloth sweater.” Said Mark Zuckerberg in a statement.
Meta first introduced 3D avatars on Instagram and rolled out updated avatars on Facebook and messenger. The updates brought more expressions, faces, skin tones ad accessibility devices including using them across all meta platforms and has since been working on improvements to enhance its avatars.
