Laid-off Tesla employees snatched by rival automakers & tech giants

A few days ago, Tesla reportedly closed its San Mateo office, terminating 200 hourly workers in the process. This was part of a larger goal of reducing 10% of its salaried employees.

However, it seems that the decision may have had unforeseen consequences. Many of the former Tesla employees have joined competitors like Rivian Automotive and Lucid Motors.

According to a report from Punks & Pinstripes, a private network of Fortune 500 C-level executives, major tech companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google have also benefited from the layoffs by employing dozens of ex-Tesla employees.

The company has studied 457 former Tesla employees over the last 90 days using information from LinkedIn Sales Navigator.

To begin with, 90 former Tesla workers got new positions at competing electric vehicle firms Rivian and Lucid—56 at the former and 34 at the latter. It’s interesting to note that only 8 of them joined traditional automakers like Ford and General Motors.

Tesla frequently refers to itself as a technology company rather than a traditional automaker, and the fact that 179 of the 457 recorded former employees joined such behemoths like Apple (51 employees), Amazon (51), Google (29), Meta (25) and Microsoft (23) seems to support that claim.

Redwood Materials (12), the battery recycling business led by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, and Zoox (9), an autonomous car startup financed by Amazon, were two other prominent destinations for Tesla personnel.
