The Crown has survived sixteen generations in Japan and other markets around the world, with the most recent iteration introduced in 2018.
The Crown has now returned as a lifted mid-size sedan. The top trim level even has a two-tone paint job and your choice of two Toyota hybrid systems.
The base XLE and mid-level Limited trims include a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with Toyota’s fourth-generation hybrid powertrain technology. This configuration includes two electric motors with a dedicated EV mode for short-distance, low-speed travel, with a combined fuel economy of up to 38 miles per gallon. The only gearbox option is an electronic CVT.
The Platinum trim level includes the new Hybrid Max powertrain, which combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine with two electric motors. This gives the top tier Crown a total output of 340 horsepower, but this version only gets 28 mpg combined, according to Toyota. This model is only available with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. However, it loses the EV drive mode of the base car but gains Sport+, Comfort, and Custom modes.
The Crown has a 112.2-inch wheelbase, 194-inch overall length, and 72.4-inch width and is based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA-K). The Crown stands 60.6 inches tall, about four inches higher than the Camry. Lower-level XLE and Limited trims will have 19-inch wheels, while Platinum models will have adaptive dampers and 21-inch wheels.
The Crown interior includes a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Cloth and synthetic suede upholstery are standard on XLE models, while leather, a panoramic sunroof, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system are standard on Limited and Platinum models. Buyers of the Platinum package will receive cooled front seats, a surround-view camera system, and a digital key. Standard features across the lineup include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and over-the-air software updates.
Toyota’s suite of active safety technology will be standard on every Crown, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and blind-spot monitors. Platinum models now have automatic parking.
Toyota stated that pricing will be announced closer to the Crown’s arrival in dealerships later this year, and that it will be manufactured in Japan.
