A Look at iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max

With the release of Apple‘s iPhone 14 range just months away and hotly anticipated, we now have an idea of some of the features of the new phone. One feature not to receive much attention so far has been the naming convention and hierarchy of the phones. An announcement from Apple is expected in September to detail the launch of a more affordable iPhone 14. It is now rumoured that his latest budget version will be called the iPhone 14 Plus. A naming convention going back to Apple’s previous marketing choice for larger phones.

6.1-inch, as well as two 6.7-inch models, will be available in the line-up. The two iPhone 14 Pro models will, as previously, support 120Hz ProMotion display technology. It is thought 120hz refresh won’t be available across all of Apple’s generation 14 phones because of component supply issues. The 5.4-inch iPhone of the 13th series is no longer, due to low sales and limited appeal the 13 will be the last of the mini line and it is expected Apple will concentrate on its larger 6.1 and 6.7-inch phones in the future for flagship models.

Apple hierarchy for the new 14 iPhone model line will ascend as follows:

Display

Both phones will feature an always-on display to work with the Lock Screen widget feature in iOS 16. iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max owners will be able to immediately access information like weather, fitness, reminders, calendar events, and more, straight from the lock screen without having to wake the main iPhone’s display.

Battery

Something that has seen speculation recently is Apple’s iPhone 14 battery life.

Shared by industry insider ShrimpApplePro as a leak, the phones are to be equipped with batteries capacities as follows:

  • iPhone 14 – 3279 mAh (iPhone 13 equivalents – 3,227 mAh)
  • iPhone 14 Max – 4325 mAh (N/A)
  • iPhone 14 Pro – 3200 mAh (iPhone 13 Pro equivalents – 3,095 mAh)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max – 4323 mAh (iPhone 3 Pro Max equivalents – 4,352 mAh)

If these capacities are correct it would hint toward the upcoming iPhone 14 Max being able to outlast the flagship iPhone 14 Pro Max. This unusual situation is brought about by the differences in what each of the models line up is expecting out of their battery. The iPhone 14 Pro models will be asking the processor to process the data files from its 48mp camera, 4 times the size of the 12mp camera files in the standard phone. The RAM capacity is increased too, and although this results in a faster phone, it also results in a phone that requires a larger battery to function for the same length of time as the standard model. The Pro phones will feature the continuance of a LiDAR Scanner in their line-up.

Design

iPhone 14 Pro models will have a new i-shaped dual cut-out display, which has had a mixed reception. A larger camera hump and a next-generation chipset look to offer a much-needed boost in processing power for the new line of phones.

In contrast, it is going to be difficult to tell the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 apart. Its successor is rumoured to have an identical outward design. The camera specifications and chipset also only A16 chipset and its new DDR5 Ram has a chance of offsetting this need for a larger battery, whether it does remains to be seen. The new phones are again rumoured to have 50% more RAM. All indicators at the moment are pointing towards an incremental generational upgrade as opposed to a revolutionary one.

It is expected that Apple will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 5G chip, with its 10-gigabit 5G modem that delivers faster connectivity speeds and improvements. Alongside the X65, Apple is expected to introduce a new suite of satellite-based emergency features that will enable Apple iPhone users to send texts in emergencies and report accidents without the need for cellular coverage. This is likely to be a feature incorporated in Apple’s car crash detection feature within iOS which is an expansion of the existing fall detection system.

The range of spec levels in Apple’s iPad, Mac, and MacBook ranges in recent years has gone up, not to everyone’s delight, but the ranges are now wider than ever. iPhone is in this respect catching up with its Apple stablemates.

eSIM

iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models are rumoured to be launched without a physical SIM slot and working on an eSIM only. Apple is forging ahead with the eSIM and is expecting cell network carriers to keep up. eSIM functionality is not available globally, so iPhones sold in some areas will need to offer a nanosim slot. In countries where a SIM-free iPhone is possible, it may be optional, with customers still able to choose a version with a SIM. With over 60 countries now supporting eSIM, it is gaining ground.

A Choice

Whether you plan on using your new iPhone for the camera, for the best new apps, or even for searching for casino sites like these there is lots to be excited about. Especially as it is not so long ago that the predecessors to the current iPhone 13 line-up were struggling to show iPhone could compete with the larger-screened Android phones of the time. The iPhone 13 took a big leap forward and gave Apple a product that once again took the fight to Android. We all hope the hotly anticipated iPhone 14 Pro and Max can be just as defining in Apple’s future in the smartphone market. Pre-orders for Apple’s 14th generation iPhone range look strong in China where the deposit required to do so is significantly higher than the iPhone 13 was before its release. This signifies an increased demand for the phones which are expected to have a production of 100 million units in the second half of 2022
