Twitter Starts Testing an Edit Tweet Feature

Twitter has started testing its highly requested Edit Tweet feature internally. The feature will be available for Twitter Blue Subscribers in the coming weeks.

After years of memes and jokes, Twitter is working on an edit tweet button that will let users make changes to their tweets after its published. We don’t know yet if it will be available for all users after the test but Twitter blue users will have access in the next few weeks.

“For this test, Tweets will be able to be edited a few times in the 30 minutes following their publication,” according to a Twitter blog post. “Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so it’s clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified.”

Worst still, tapping on the edited label will take viewers to the tweets edit history which includes the past versions of the tweet. This is a good step, however, you’ll still need to be careful with what you Tweet as the edit history will be available to the rest of the users on your timeline in case you were planning to misuse it.

Twitter says, “For context, the time limit and version history play an important role here. They help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said.”

Once the initial internal testing is complete, the Edit Tweet feature will expand to some Twitter Blue subscribers later this month as part of their subscription agreement with Twitter. “The test will be localized to a single country at first and expand as we learn and observe how people use Edit Tweet,” explains Twitter.

Twitter also says, they’ll be paying close attention to how people use Edit Tweet, and the way people read, write and engage with Tweets.

Jay Sullivan, Twitter’s VP of consumer product, said earlier this year that editing a tweet has been “the most requested Twitter feature for many years.” While it’s highly requested, there has also been concern around misuse. Former CEO Jack Dorsey resisted an Edit Tweet feature, saying in 2020 that Twitter would “probably never” add the feature.

Facebook, Instagram and Medium, are some of the apps that included edit buttons and there aren’t many high-profile examples of abuses. Edit Tweet might as well be a good experience for users.
