Tesla Berlin Gigafactory catches fire, activists demand production halt

The Tesla Gigafactory in Berlin caught fire. The fire started at a recycling plant attached to the main facility. It happened at 3 a.m. local time in Germany.

A large amount of cardboard and wood caught fire in the factory’s recycling facility, according to German media. It is currently unknown what caused the incident. The flames could be seen from afar, and it took 50 firefighters, 12 of whom were from Tesla’s own brigade, to put out the fire.

Around 8 a.m., the combined teams were able Extinguish the fire. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injured factory workers.

Unlike many other fires at electric vehicle manufacturing plants, this one had nothing to do with EVs or their frequently problematic battery packs.

According to German media, citizens in the plant’s immediate vicinity are now calling for a halt in production until an explanation for what happened is provided.

The Berlin Tesla plant continues to produce over 1,000 cars per week, with a goal of 5,000 vehicles in the same period by 2023. The main factory building, where cars are manufactured, was unaffected by the fire.

Tesla’s has previously been taken to court in Germany over allegations of misleading advertising regarding the company’s carbon-dioxide emissions.
