Amazon is ordering 20 electric trucks from Volvo

Amazon is expanding its electric vehicle fleet in accordance with its 2019 Climate Pledge. The e-commerce giant has ordered 20 Volvo electric trucks which will be delivered by the end of the year to support its logistics in Germany, 

Amazon chose Volvo FH 44 ton trucks with 540 kWh batteries and 490 kW continuous power output. The trucks have a range of 300 km (186 miles) on a single charge, but they must travel 500 km every day. The driver’s lunch break will be used for the quick recharge. In total, the trucks are expected to travel over 1 million kilometers per year.

So far, the company has ordered 100,000 Rivian electric vans, 1,800 Mercedes-Benz electric vans, and ten trucks from Lion Electric .

Amazon has successfully completed one of the most rapid electrification programs in commercial transportation. Currently, the e-commerce giant’s drivers deliver an average of 1.6 million packages per day; the company owns over 100,000 vans, the vast majority of which run on diesel. Replacing the entire fleet of internal combustion engines will be difficult, but so far, Amazon is on track to meet their Zero Carbon Pledge by 2040.
