Twitter Employees Are Given An Ultimatum by Elon Musk: Either work “very hard” or Leave

According to a copy of a late-night internal email written by the billionaire, Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, has given employees until Thursday evening to commit to “very rigorous” labour or leave the organisation.

“Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore,” Musk wrote in the memo. “This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

Musk continues in the memo by explaining how Twitter will be “much more engineering-driven” and then issues a directive to the staff. Staff are directed to what appears to be an online form by the statement “If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below.”

By Thursday at 5 p.m. ET, Musk said, any employee who hasn’t done so will receive three months’ severance pay. Initial coverage of the memo appeared in The Washington Post.

The email, with the subject line “A fork in the road,” was sent at a time when Musk and Twitter employees have engaged in both public and private spats over his management style for the company. Additionally, it follows Musk’s ouster of Twitter’s top executives, the dissolution of the board of directors, and the reduction of about half the workforce, which included key positions in curation, wellness, public policy, and other teams.

Musk stated that he anticipates Twitter’s “basic organisational restructure” to be accomplished by the end of this week during testimony in a Delaware trial over his Tesla compensation package on Wednesday. He continued by saying that although in the recent weeks Twitter has received the “lion’s share” of his time, he doesn’t anticipate that to continue indefinitely.

“I expect to reduce my time at Twitter, and find somebody else to run Twitter, over time,” Musk said.

Musk has set forth lofty objectives for how he intends to alter the platform in the meantime and is pressuring his team to meet them as he works to boost the business’s bottom line as soon as possible. Additionally, it’s been said that Musk has given his staff members conflicting instructions, such as asking them to print out numerous pages of recently created code before instructing them to shred it.

At least one Twitter employee also tweeted about dozing off on the office floor. Musk has acknowledged in the past that he has occasionally worked up to 120 hours per week and slept on the floor at a Tesla facility.

Employee resistance and concerns have been expressed to Musk on Twitter.

A document outlining concerns about Musk’s then-proposed plan to launch a system where users could pay to receive a verification checkmark was one instance where employees earlier this month gave Musk and his team a presentation. Without implementing many of the recommended safeguards, Musk launched the system, and some of the employees’ fears materialised quickly. Just two days after its debut, Twitter halted the system’s rollout, but on Tuesday the company announced that it would resume later this month.

“Whatever decision you make,” Musk said in the memo, “thank you for your efforts to make Twitter successful.”
