Twitter will soon start recommending users whose accounts and tweets they should follow.
Simply put, Twitter is enhancing its recommendations tool. Therefore, whether they like it or not, users who previously shunned the suggestion function on the app will now receive recommendations.
“We want to ensure everyone on Twitter sees the best content on the platform, so we’re expanding recommendations to all users, including those who may not have seen them in the past. You can learn more about them, and how to best control your experience,” Twitter said in a tweet.
Accordingly, if you see a tweet from an account you don’t follow, Twitter is essentially attempting to introduce you to the topics and users that most interest you. Based on your behaviour, you are provided personalised recommendations in the form of tweets. Twitter claims in its blog that recommendations are meant to improve the user experience and that the more information you have about them, the better they may be.
Twitter shows you recommendations based on the interests you have told Twitter about, the topics you follow, the Tweets you engage with, and even the Tweets people in your network like. “Recommendations can appear in your Home timeline, certain places within the Explore tab, and elsewhere on Twitter,” the blog read.
Users can manage the recommendations using the tools that Twitter offers.
The “sparkle icon” in the top right corner of your Home timeline is one of these choices. You can use this to switch between seeing the most recent “Latest” Tweets from simply the accounts you follow and the top “For You” Tweets, which contain recommendations from users and Topics you don’t mind.
