Will the Roulette wheel spin in your favour?

The Roulette wheel is considered to be a true casino classic. Consisting of a wheel, a table and a small ball, Roulette has grown over the years to earn top spot on many players’ ‘to play’ lists, as they attempt to predict the outcome of the game.

Over the years, Roulette has become a staple not only for casino goers, but also for online gamers, especially when they play casino online.

With its ever-increasing popularity, let’s explore how and why we think Roulette has not only stood the test of time, but flourished along its journey through centuries of spinning…

Where it all began

It is believed that the first designs for the Roulette wheel derived from an invention gone wrong in the 17th century, when French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal attempted to create a perpetual motion machine. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the first form of the Roulette wheel we know and love today arrived on the gaming scene in France.

The love for the game grew, however, in France the game was soon banned and gambling travelled across Europe. It was here that brothers François and Louis Blanc decided to reinvent Roulette by removing one of the pockets within the wheel, the double zero, leaving only a single zero, and the numbers one through thirty-six in play.

This reduced the house edge from 5.26% to 2.70%, which meant lower odds and higher returns to player percentages. By doing this, this particular variant of the wheel became increasingly popular with players and this version lives on today, known as European Roulette.

Spinning around the world

Roulette soon set sail around the world, landing in America in the 19th century, where players preferred the original two zero pocket version; one single, one double. Today, this is known as the American version of the Roulette wheel.

Soon after landing on American shores, word spread and the wheel spun across the country and into shipping lands, becoming a firm favourite with all who played.

In more recent years, the invention of the internet brought new ways for players to access the wheel without the need to physically visit a casino.

And with technology always evolving and advancing, the gaming opportunities have only grown, and will continue to do so, allowing players to access all variants of the game, including online Brazilian Roulette, from the comfort of their couch.

This has allowed more players to enjoy a classic than if it was only available in person at their local casino.

In today’s world, we can only imagine what the games will be like for future generations. Will we see a new variant of the Roulette wheel, or will ever-advancing technology pay homage to the wheel and keep a classic in its original state?

One thing is for sure, you have to spin the wheel to potentially beat the wheel, but will it be in your favour? Only the wheel can tell – is it time for another spin?
