Electrify America has collaborated with TravelCenters of America (TA) to install EV fast chargers at its rest stops.

According to a joint press release, TA and Electrify America hope to install 1,000 individual DC fast-charging stations at 200 locations along major highways over the next five years, with the first stations going live in 2023.

Both companies have a goal of bringing “next-generation fast-chargers at 50-mile intervals across the country.”

The chargers will be purchased by TA from Electrify America, but they will be installed, operated, and maintained by Electrify America. Customers will be able to find these chargers and pay for charging sessions automatically through the Electrify America app, just like they can with other chargers owned entirely by the company.

Travel centers have proven to be a good fit for EV charging because they occupy necessary roadside real estate while also providing amenities for drivers waiting for a charge.

Electrify America’s overall goal is to have more than 1,800 total charging sites with more than 10,000 individual chargers in the United States and Canada by 2026. To that end, the company has been seeking outside funding from backers such as Siemens to supplement VW’s $2 billion commitment.
