Ford unveils the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, a super EV made for breaking the World Record

Ford Performance has just shown an electric prototype of the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800. It was created with the goal of beating the NHRA world record for the quickest quarter-mile electric car.

Ford already holds the world record for the fastest electric car in a quarter-mile run. In 2020, the Mustang Cobra 1400 was taken to a dragstrip and recorded a time of 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph. Despite the 1400 in its name, the Mustang in question had 1,502 horsepower; Ford decided that it wasn’t fast enough. The successor- Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 –comes with an entirely redesigned 1,800 horsepower dragstrip setup.

According to the automaker, the two electric motors (when used in tandem) produce at least 1,800 horsepower. The inverters and motors are the same as in the prior vehicle, but the transmission is completely new. The battery pack is also new and substantially lighter. To deal with the greater power, the rear suspension has been upgraded, and the changes are completed by a set of larger rear tires for more traction.

Ford Performance global director Mark Rushbrook stated that the battery modifications alone saved hundreds of pounds in weight. Less weight means more speed, larger tires mean more traction, and a new transmission means fewer power losses – all of these upgrades, along with increased power, are intended to break records.

During an NHRA event later this season, Ford will attempt to set a record for the quickest accelerating electric vehicle (0 to 60 mph) as well as the fastest two-wheel drive electric vehicle.
